Overview

"Superyacht" is the broadest and most commonly used term in the industry, generally applied to private motor or sailing yachts starting around 24 meters (roughly 79 feet) in length — the point at which vessels typically require a professional crew and fall under more extensive maritime regulation.

What changes at this scale

At this size, a yacht typically has multiple guest cabins, a dedicated crew area separate from guest spaces, and enough range and onboard systems (generators, water-makers, stabilizers) to support extended cruising rather than day trips. Many charter fleets are concentrated in this size range.

Good to know

The 24-meter threshold roughly corresponds to certain international maritime safety and crewing regulations coming into effect, which is part of why it's commonly used as the informal starting point for "superyacht" classification.

Notable: Most yachts profiled in general charter and lifestyle media fall into this size class, since it represents the largest share of the active charter fleet by vessel count.

Length and crew figures are general industry patterns, not strict definitions — usage varies between yards, brokers, and media.
